5 Reasons Why You Should Meditate

Let’s start by clarifying what meditation is. Many people think meditation is about removing your problems and worries to become an improved version of themselves.

In reality, meditation is built upon the idea of getting in touch with your thoughts and feelings so you can gain a better understanding of them, and therefore healthily cope with them.

We’ve all had moments in our lives where our minds are consumed by negative thoughts, perspectives, and feelings.

Instead of ignoring them, and letting them consume our current and future mindset, meditation helps us get in touch with them so we can deal with them and prevent them from causing us future pain.

Weight Loss

To lose and keep weight off, our body and mind need to be on the same page. When they have different views they can sabotage each other, but when they are in agreement they have a synergistic relationship that is so good for our health and wellbeing.

Stress is a huge influence on weight. When we become stressed we have a tendency to overeat, leading to weight gain. We overeat because of our emotions, not our physical hunger.

We often use food as a comforter in times of stress and uncertainty. Meditation helps lower stress, which takes away the need for a comforter such as food, and therefore helps us in our weight loss journey.

Self-Care

If someone is going to spend their entire life with you, you’d want them to love you unconditionally, right?

Well, you are the only person who spends every second of every day with you. That’s why self-care is so incredibly important.

When you are consumed by negative thoughts, low self-esteem, and reduced confidence - it's clearly not good for you.

Meditation helps take care of ourselves by building confidence and self-esteem. Consequently, we develop a positive perspective on the things that cause us to worry.

Self-Love

Meditation teaches us to get in touch with our bodies and learn to love ourselves. Sure, we’re not just going to wake up one day and instantly love everything about ourselves, but we will start to appreciate what we can do as individuals, and how our individual quirks make us the beautiful person we deserve to be.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a deliberating condition linked to an inability to regulate our emotions. Meditation is by no means a cure for anxiety, but it is a tool to help manage it.

Through meditation, we can learn to deal with both the physical and mental effects of anxiety. We become aware of our triggers and limit the negative influence they have on our thoughts. We also learn to deal with the physiological response by exploring the physical changes.

Improved Sleep

Meditation helps us deal with our worries by looking at them with a positive perspective. In turn, our minds are relaxed which makes it easier to fall and stay asleep.

Additionally, focusing on our breathing helps slow down our bodies physiological systems, again improving sleep quality and quantity.
