How to Fit More NEAT Into Your Day

For busy, working mums NEAT can be an easy way to fit more activity into your life without having to take too much time out of your day, or drastically change your schedule.

For most of us going to the gym, or going on a run just isn’t possible, but that doesn’t mean we have to be inactive and miss out on all the great benefits exercise has to offer us.

What the hell is NEAT?

NEAT is Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. It's basically the energy we use during day-to-day tasks.

It's calories burned for non-planned activities. These are the activities we don’t associate with exercise, they are simply something we do in our everyday lives which requires more energy than general rest.

Activities vary widely but include things like walking, gardening, and cleaning just to name a few.

Increasing our NEAT helps reap the benefits of exercise while burning calories along the way, it’s a win-win situation.

Here are a couple of tips to easily up your NEAT:

Take a stroll while you talk I’ve found this to be the number one way to increase activity during the day, it’s an absolute game-changer. Just like the stereotype portrays, women LOVE a chat.

Whether that’s on a work call or a catch-up with a friend, we can talk for hours. Instead of sitting around, take some steps while you are chatting away. The best thing is, you're so engrossed in the conversation, you don’t even realise you’re exercising.

If you’re on the phone, pace around the house or take your longer chats on a walk with you. If you’re meeting up face to face instead of sitting in a coffee shop, ask for your coffee to go and take it on a walk while you and your friend catch up.

Take the stairs This is such an easy and quick option, it baffles me why more people aren’t doing it.

Generally, taking the stairs is quicker than an elevator, and much more refreshing than being boxed into a lift. They allow you to get places quicker with more personal space, and add exercise into your day. Go on, take the stairs!

Use less technology There are many great perks of technology, but it has made us a bit lazy. We live in an age where we can now ask our appliances to switch on/off. While convenient, it does prevent us from moving.

Little movements throughout the day may seem insignificant, but it all adds up. Regular movement is great for calorie burn and general mobility and health, it’s not something we should restrict ourselves from.

Get off the bus one stop earlier Do you take the bus to work or University? Can you jump off one stop earlier and just add a few more minutes walking into your day? So simple, yet so effective.

Walk on your lunch break You'll already have your Rosie packed lunch with you, so why not take a walk and go and eat it somewhere far away from the office. The fresh air and breather will do you some good too. Perfect for stress relief.

Active games with your kids You'll be spending time with your kiddies anyway, so why not invent some cool games that will burn some extra calories. Whether it's hide and seek, murder in the dark or duck duck goose - have fun and make memories with your kiddiewinks and it won't feel like exercise at all.
